Hans Gross Investigative Competition
The Hans Gross Investigative Competition was organised in cooperation of ELSA Chernivtsi with the Criminalistics Laboratory of the Criminal Law Department of the Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University and the Chernivtsi Research and Development Centre of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
The competition was attended by 24 teams from different parts of Ukraine - Kharkiv, Poltava, Kyiv, Dnipro, Luhansk Institute relocated to Ivano-Frankivsk, Chernivtsi, and Khmelnytskyi. They competed with each other in an online qualifying round. Based on its results, 6 best teams made it to the semi-finals, taking place offline on 10 November at the Law Faculty of the Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University.
We would like to express our gratitude to the Department of Criminal Law and the Hans Gross Criminalistics Laboratory of the Law Faculty of the Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University for their cooperation and assistance in organising the event!

Panel discussion "The Role of Women in Politics and Business: Boosting Representation and Combating Stereotypes"
"The Role of Women in Politics and Business: Boosting Representation and Combating Stereotypes" featured a panel discussion where participants immersed themselves in the world of politics and business, had the opportunity to meet experts, discuss their challenges and share their insights on combating stereotypes. During the event, we discussed the relevance and importance of women's active participation in both industries.
The speakers, Iryna Butyrska and Lyudmyla Onofriyese, shared their personal expertise and highlighted the challenges women face as they strive to hold important positions and develop their careers.
It was particularly interesting to consider the topic of stereotypes and prejudices that women face in these areas. We sincerely believe that such discussions will help raise public awareness and contribute to changing the situation in a positive way.
We would like to thank the students of Chernivtsi National University, Kherson State University and students of Koroviya Lyceum for joining us, and we look forward to seeing you at future ELSA events!

Cinema night with ELSA Chernivtsi, watching the film “Just Mercy”
Apart from our dedicated efforts in professional and academ events, ELSA Chernivtsi places a strong emphasis on fostering communication and engagement among its members. A recent example of this commitment was manifested through a Film Night held on November 27, 2023.
The primary objective of this initiative was to strengthen the bonds among our local chapter members, fostering meaningful connections and cultivating a sense of community. The event aimed to facilitate in-person interactions and provide an enjoyable shared experience. We organised a viewing of the film "Just Mercy", and it not only served as a relaxing and entertaining occasion but also inspired new ideas among our members.
Encouraged by the success of this event, we are enthusiastic about planning and executing diverse activities for our members in the future. In future, we strive to organise many more internal events of different formats for our memebers!

Bilateral Study Visit between ELSA Chernivtsi and ELSA Suceava

The first part of the Study Visit took place on 16–18 May 2025. The event, organized by ELSA Chernivtsi with the support of the Faculty of Law of Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University, became the first international offline event since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The Study Visit began with an official ceremony at Chernivtsi National University, where representatives of the university administration warmly welcomed the guests. Participants attended lectures on current issues of international criminal law delivered by Dr. Vitalii Yaremchuk and practicing lawyer Ruslan Ivanyuk. The program also included an institutional visit to the Main Department of the National Police in Chernivtsi region, where participants learned about the work of the KORD special unit and the Canine Service, observing impressive demonstrations of their professional skills.
The second day of the study visit was marked by the arrival of Professor Mihai Dimian, Rector of “Ștefan cel Mare” University of Suceava, who expressed sincere support for Ukrainian academic partners and the entire Ukrainian people. On this day, Dr. Maryna Ilika delivered a lecture on “The Role of the International Criminal Court in Ensuring Justice,” followed by a meeting with Vitalina Savchuk, private notary of the Chernivtsi City Notarial District, who shared insights into notarial practice in Ukraine. The day concluded with a public speaking training session led by Pavlina Shats.
The final day focused on practical activities — participants took part in a legal quest, a brain ring competition, and a workshop conducted by Assoc. Prof. Ivan Toronchuk and Florian Gheorghe, lawyer and representative of the Faculty of Law and Administrative Sciences of Suceava University.
The event provided participants with valuable academic and practical experience, strengthened cooperation between ELSA Chernivtsi and ELSA Suceava, and became a great example of meaningful international exchange. -

National series of webinars «Human Rights Law During Armed Conflicts»

National Series of Webinars “Human Rights Law During Armed Conflicts” offered participants the opportunity to deepen their understanding of human rights protection in times of war and to explore modern challenges in this field. Through a series of expert-led discussions, the event highlighted the crucial role of international law in safeguarding human dignity during armed conflicts.
The webinars featured distinguished speakers, including Maria Ihnatova, lawyer, founder of the “Prosto Yurydychno” project and expert in IT/IP and AI law; Donna Cline, US-licensed criminal trial lawyer and head of the Environmental Mobile Justice Team at Global Rights Compliance; Sofia Cánovas Pereda, Senior PSEA Advisor to the Head of the United Nations in Ukraine; and Florian Gheorghe, international lawyer and Attorney in Residence at Suceava University Law School.
Among the topics discussed were “The Cost of War: Protecting Human Rights in Armed Conflicts,” “The Fight for Justice: Setting a Precedent for War Crimes Against the Environment,” “Gender-Based Violence in Cox’s Bazar,” “Mechanisms for Documenting Violations: Tools and Ethical Boundaries,” and “The Fight for Human Rights: Establishing International Norms and Standards.”
This event emphasized the importance of human rights law knowledge and helped raise awareness about urgent global issues, inspiring participants to advocate for justice and accountability even in times of conflict. -
National seminar on diplomatic and consular law

The National Seminar on Diplomatic and Consular Law gathered students, young lawyers, and experts to explore key aspects of diplomacy and consular relations in international law. Traditionally held with the support of the Faculty of Law, the event serves as an academic platform for discussing current issues in diplomatic practice and international cooperation.
This year’s speakers included Florian Gheorghe, graduate of the University of Bucharest and international law expert; Maria Protsiuk, Ph.D. in Political Science and Deputy Head at the Ukrainian Institute; Olha Chepel, Ph.D. in Law, Associate Professor at Chernivtsi National University; and Ivan Toronchuk, Ph.D. in Law, Associate Professor at the same department.
Participants discussed modern challenges in diplomatic and consular law, the evolution of international legal standards, and the importance of effective communication in global relations.
